Congratulations goes to Wayne Mortimer who has been appointed as the new Disciplinary Officer for the Welsh Karate Governing Body (WKGB)
Wayne started learning Karate under Lee Costa back in September of 1983. He went on to take the role of Chief Instructor of the newly formed Karate Jutsu Kai for Wales (WJK) in 1991 as a 2nd Dan. We wish him all the best in his new role.



History


Welsh Karate Governing Body (WKGB) Ltd


The structure of karate in Wales and the control of the sport has evolved over many years. The first recorded formalisation of such a controlling body was established in 1973/4 when it was recognised as the Welsh Karate Board. In 1977 when the first register of black belts was published there was only one 4th Dan and eight 2nd Dans. The official list can be seen here. Changing over a period of time to become the Welsh Karate Federation and is now established as the Welsh Karate Governing Body Ltd. (WKGB) and now has 7th and 8th Dans on the register.

The WKGB Ltd. was established with an initial total membership of 6 associations. Until recently it had in the region of 42 autonomous member associations with a combined membership of some 6000 individuals. This has led to the WKGB Ltd. being recognised by the Sports Council for Wales as the governing body for the sport of karate throughout Wales. Through its membership of the European Karate Federation(EKF), the WKGB is able to send Welsh squads to compete in the annual EKF Championships throughout Europe. As a member of the World Karate Federation, WKGB members are also available for selection and competition on the world stage and through this membership the WKGB is recognised by the International Olympic Committee.

The WKGB has a mandate to regulate, develop and promote the sport of karate in Wales by providing a range of services such as ensuring best practice within the sport, coaching development, offering opportunities to Associations and students equally. They are also tasked with ensuring compliance to relevant standards as well as current and developing regulation. They have a formal structure in place with officers having formal positions.

We are fortunate in the Welsh Karate Jutsu Kai to have a chief instructor ,Lee Costa, who has, over the years, been highly active within the growth of karate in Wales as can be seen by the following profile of his involvement:

Lee Costa has represented Wales on numerous occasions at National and International levels (EKU Championship). He was part of the first ever Welsh Squad to fight in the EKU Tournament (1974) and represented Wales in their first tournament outside the British Isles in 1975 when they competed in Belgium. M Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip Visit


On the 26th May 1999, The Welsh Assembly was opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip . The royals also visited the ground of Cardiff Castle where a representation of some sport personalities was in attendance.

Ritchie Noblett and Lee Costa were in charge of performing a karate demonstration with the Juniors National Team. The demonstration took place on arrival of the HM Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip. Ritchie Noblett and Lee Costa were representing the Welsh Karate Governing Body. queen visit

Ian Morris


Ian was a Mechanical Engineer (M.I.P.E.) in both the Nuclear and Marine Industries before early retirement allowed him to concentrate on business issues. Introducing his son Paul to karate under Lee Costa (WKJK) in 1989/90, it was not long before Ian also started training not only at the Cogan dojo but throughout the many associated clubs under the WKJK banner.

Active in setting up clubs in alternative sports (inline roller hockey), Ian has held positions as Coach, Secretary and Club Chairman at various times and has taken both Junior and Senior teams through to National Finals. Currently practicing Chinese martial arts he is looking to return to full time karate training and meanwhile has been appointed the WKJK representative dealing with several issues and assisting wherever needed.
