An evening not to forget! Congratulations to the host of the evening Paul Clifton, for the excellent organisation on the prestige event. I was very proud to be there with Unel Wellignton on the evening while he was collecting his award for his dedication to the development of the martial arts in the United Kingdom and around the world. Without people like Unel Welsh karate wouldn’t be the same! Well Done! We are very proud of you.

Rhodri & Jade gaining points. Jade is currently top in her category, hopefully she’ll successfully defend her title for a second year running”

SUNDAY sees a new chapter in Welsh karate when - for the first time in years — Wales’ three most successful competitive karate organizations compete together.
The Welsh Karate League brings in competitors — from junior beginners to senior internationals — from the Welsh Karate Association and the Welsh Bushi-Kai, Wales’ most successful associations during the 1980s and 90s, and Barry-based Vale Karate, who have won no less than 150 Welsh titles over the past decade.
The WKA, based at the Ken Bu Kan Dojo in Swansea, and led by the legendary Wellington brothers - Unel and Stephen - have been outside the Welsh Karate governing body for the past few years, but have shown they are still very much a force to be reckoned with by dominating the Welsh Karate League in its initial two series.
The Welsh Bushi-Kai, after the tragic loss of their charismatic leader Ritchie Noblett in November 2009, have bounced back and under the leadership of coach Nigel Taylor are enjoying a purple patch, winning an unprecedented 16 gold medals at the recent Welsh Championships.
These three associations, together with respected sensei’s such as Gabe Operanta. Paul Watson, Lee Costa and Dave Jones - respective heads of the WSKA. WKU, WKJK and CKJK - are determined to make this year’s Welsh Karate League events, which begin this weekend in Maesteg, a series of omissible tournaments. Their aim is to take Welsh karate to new heights and offering a stage for the development of the sport, in spirit of friendship and fierce competition.
As a final warm up before the league kicks off; both the Bushi-Ki and Vale Karate squads attended the Weston Karate Union’s invitational Championships at the weekend. Ewan Albright nine, of Vale Karate
- a winner of three Welsh titles in 2010 — was back to his best in Weston beating the best Wales and England had to offer, earning a well deserve gold in the under-10 boys kumite in impressive style.

On the 23rd January 2011 a referee training course took place at Penarth Leisure Centre. Gabe Operanta and Steve Wellington addressed the course with over 35 people on attendance.
The chairman of the WKL league Mr Tom Baker, gave a short introductory speech, emphasising that this course was not to compete with the WKGB Ltd but a training course for the league purposes to acquire experience and knowledge, which can be a platform for the ones who wish to take their qualifications to a higher level.
Steve Wellington gave a power point presentation and went through the WKF refereeing rules & regulations. Attendees who gave a very positive feedback praised Gabe and Steve. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere was highlighted. Attendance certificates were given.
Due to the success of the course, it was agreed that the next WKL referees/ time keepers and table officials course will take place at Penarth Leisure Centre on Sunday 6th of March 2011 from 10a.m. to 3.00p.m. If you are interested in attending the course, please contact the WKL secretary Mora at Moragarside@tesco.net for further details.
